The story of our adventures in Peru
Our Trip to Peru
Finally our dreams of traveling to Peru with kids came true in the summer of 2017. The kids are 8 and 10 now, old enough handle long days of travel and seasoned enough to handle breaks in familiar routines and food. With English to Spanish Translator Lite iphone app and Yuri’s fourth grade Spanish our only link to the language, local travel agents for support, we set off on our Peruvian adventure!
About 6 months before the trip, we started preparing the kids for the trip. We got some books about Peruvian history, geography and culture from the library and watched documentaries about Inca history, Cusco, Lima and Machu Picchu on Amazon Prime. As we learned more about Peru, we each started coming up with our own wish list. Yuri wanted to see the Inca architecture of Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu and Rianna wanted to play with llamas and alpacas in the Andes.
As we learned about Peruvian food, the kids wanted to try cuy, which is roasted guinea pig and considered a delicacy in Peru. We looked forward to trying out a few of the thousands of varieties of corn and potatoes produced in Peru, lomas soltado, a beef-onion dish and chifa, a chinese peruvian fusion food. And of course, we looked forward to Pisco sour!
There are so many things to see and places to visit in Peru that we had a hard time cutting things out of our itinerary. We had a 2 week time constraint for the duration of the trip. To keep the pace reasonable so that we get a chance to experience each place we visit, we had to drop a few attractions that we would have liked to visit.
Our must-dos – Lima, Cusco, Inti Raymi, Lake Titicaca, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu
Our nice -to-dos that got dropped-Nazca Lines, Amazon rainforest, Colca Canyon, Inca Trail
We scoured the web for all the information we could find about traveling to Peru with kids. Armed with all the knowledge we found online, suggestions from our travel agent, combing through thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor, we came up with our itinerary and planning tips. Here’s the story of our adventure.
